Shower Mold
Shower mold, not only is it ugly, but shower mold growth is also damaging to your home and your health! Shower mold is caused mainly by two things, water and heat.
Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell different kinds of shower mold apart. Black mold in showers could be Stachybotrys – the most toxic “black mold” – but it could be Alternaria or Aspergillus, two common household molds.
You can have your shower mold tested to determine what variety it is, but the CDC recommends treating all shower molds as harmful. It’s best to remove and clean any mold as quickly as possible. Read this article on Whats Causing Mold Growth In My Shower.
5 Most Common Household Molds:
Aspergillus: This mold is often found on damp surfaces and can produce mycotoxins, posing health risks. It has a powdery texture and varies in color.
Cladosporium: Commonly found on fabrics and carpets, Cladosporium appears as green or black spots. It can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory issues.
Stachybotrys chartarum (Black Mold): Thrives in areas with high humidity and water damage. It has a slimy texture and is black or dark green. Exposure may lead to respiratory problems.
Penicillium: Often seen on water-damaged materials, Penicillium has a velvety texture and comes in various colors. Some species produce mycotoxins.
Alternaria: Commonly found in damp areas, Alternaria has a woolly texture and appears dark green or brown. It can cause allergies and asthma symptoms. Regular cleaning and moisture control can help prevent mold growth.

How To Remove Shower Mold
To remove shower mold, create a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Liberally spray the affected areas and let it sit for at least an hour. Scrub the mold using a brush or sponge, focusing on stubborn spots. For tougher mold, a baking soda paste (mix with water) can enhance scrubbing power.
Rinse the area thoroughly and wipe it dry. Consider using a mold-resistant shower curtain and improving ventilation to prevent future growth. Wear protective gear like gloves and a mask during the cleaning process. Regular cleaning helps maintain a mold-free shower environment.
To remove shower mold using baking soda, follow these steps: Create a paste by mixing baking soda with water. Apply the paste directly to the mold-affected areas in your shower. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Scrub the mold using a brush or sponge. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry. Baking soda's natural abrasive properties help break down mold while being safe and eco-friendly.
